In the study of linguistic categories, word class categorization of analytic languages like Modern Chinese can be considered as the long-standing Goldbach Conjecture in linguistics. This problem,to some extent, affects the word class labeling of the contemporary Chinese dictionary, and it also has a negative impact on the study of Chinese for foreigners. In Chinese dictionaries, the word class labeling of different kinds of words has already been studied by experts and scholars, and many different kinds of adverb have also be studied and researched, while in-depth study about adverb word class labeling which based on large balanced corpora has not been touched by.On that basis, this thesis, based on the Modern Chinese Corpus of the Centre for Chinese Linguistics in Peking University,in the light of the Two-level Word Class Categorization Theory in analytic languages?shorted for TLWCCT?,and focused on the adverb lexemes in Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(7th edition)?CCD7 for short?and New Century Chinese-English Dictionary?2th edition??NCCED2 for short?,probes into the adverb lexemes in the two dictionaries to make a comparative study of the word class labeling. It has been found that the word class labeling of adverb lexemes in the two dictionaries does not make a clear distinction about the fact“the word class categorization of a word token in syntax at parole and the word class categorization of a word type in lexicon at langue”?Wang Renqiang,2014?,and it is obviously inconsistent between the word class labeling in the two dictionaries and the word class identification by corpus-based analysis, which cannot authentically reflect the word class categorization in the lexicon at langue and there exists the phenomenon of unjustifiably minimizing the number of multi-category words. The main reasons of these are blind sticking to the“Principle of Simplicity”and the neglect of adopting of corpus-based usage pattern surveys during dictionary compilation. This thesis makes an empirical study on word class labeling of the adverb lexemes in the two selected dictionaries based on a new theoretical perspective and large balanced corpus. This thesis can deepen the study on the word class labeling of Chinese word classes by making a research on the current word class labeling of adverbs, and it can also offer enlightenment for dictionary compilation and promotes the international communication.
