Translation Of Documentary Literature From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This report is written on the basis of the author's translating practice of The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands,1942-1944,which has no Chinese versions in China.The first part of chapter ten of this book is chosen to analyze from the perspective of functional equivalence.The theoretical basis of this report is the theory of functional equivalence which was put forward by Eugene Nida.In this report,part one gives an introduction of the book,the writer and the excerpted chapter.Part two gives a brief introduction to functional equivalence.It also introduces the influence of Nida's theory and criticism of Nida's functional equivalence theory.Part three describes the translation process,including preparation for the translation and three phases of the translation process.Part four is about translation techniques used to achieve equivalence.It lists translation techniques at three different levels,lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.The last part is the conclusion of this report.Under the guidance of functional equivalence,the final draft of translation was satisfying and it is found that the functional equivalence theory is still instructive to translation practice.
