As an information transmitter, news reports should reveal the objective and truthful fact. However, people can still find that reporters have added their attitudes and stances into news discourses to influence people' evaluations and attitudes towards the news events. This thesis tries to combine attitude system with the relevant thoughts of international relations theory to analyze the news discourses, exploring how reporters add their attitudes into the news discourses and the underlying reasons,so as to widen the research space of news discourses.Firstly, the research chooses 36 pieces of news reports on the South China Sea arbitration from China Daily and 38 pieces of news reports on the South China Sea arbitration from Manila Times as materials. And then under the framework of attitude system, the research compares and analyzes the employment and distribution of the attitudinal resources in news discourses, aiming at resolving the following three questions:the first question is on the attitudinal resources employed in news discourses on South China Sea arbitration from China Daily and Maila Times;the second question is on the distribution features of these attitudinal resources in China Daily and Manila Times, and its similarities and differences;the third question is on the hidden attitudes of the newspapers behind the reports and the underlying political reasons? The findings suggest that:there are significant similarities in the overall distribution frequency of attitudinal resources between China Daily and Manila Times. For example,in both two newspapers, appreciation resources are the most frequently employed among all attitudinal resources.Among appreciation resources, valuation resources are used more frequently than reaction resources and composition resources.Following appreciation resources, judgement resources rank as the second frequently used in both two newspapers.Among all judgement resources, social sanction resources appear more times than social esteem resources in both two newspapers.Affect resources are the least frequently used in both two newspapers.Among affect resources, the proportion of dis/satisfaction resources is the largest one than other three resources and the proportion of un/happiness resources is the least in order to express government's attitudes effectively. However, there are different distribution proportions of attitudinal resources between China Daily and Manila Times. For example, judgement resources in China Daily are more than those in Manila Times, while affect resources and appreciation resources in Manila Times are more than those in China Daily. For the polarity distribution of attitudinal resources, there exist differences between China Daily and Manila Times. For example, the negative resources in China Daily appear a little bit frequently than those in Manila Times, which shows that China Daily focuses more on the denying of Philippine behaviors and attitudes by listing the historical facts, but Manila Times concentrates more on drawing other countries into its side. And the two newspapers usually hold opposite attitudes towards the same events or subjects, which shows that two countries hold different interests due to their different international relations and identifies in the South China Sea area.Based on the research above, the thesis provides a new perspective for political news discourses by combining attitude system with the relevant thoughts of international relations theory.Meanwhile,it provides a new way for language teaching, especially for teaching political linguistics. Finally, the thesis lists the shortcomings of the research and gives some suggestions for future research.
