Chinese wine culture has rich patterns of manifestation in the history of China. It takes an important role in China's agriculture, the making of vessels, folk customs, literature and arts. With the application of corpus-based method to study translation,in this thesis a survey was made in three domains of jiu(?)or Chinese wine culture in the translations of ShuihuZhuan,i.e.,material,social and mental domains. The corpus of source and target texts of ShuihuZhuan was then analyzed from the perspective of image schemas, metaphorical and metonymical mappings, and a discussion of the image of Chinese wine was made. The author of the thesis found out that the cultural conceptualization of the wine culture in the translations was different from that in the source text. For metaphorical mappings, when the translators try to translate the “purpose-event” metaphors in the social domain, the images of Chinese wine have met some impediment in the transmission, while the metaphorical mappings of the material domain and mental domain have been transmitted effectively. For metonymical mappings, the translations have neglected the transmission of jiu as an important metonymy in the translation of the collocation “wine feast”,and have changed a lot in the translation of the names of vessels. In other aspects of translation, the metonymical mappings of the image of Chinese wine have been effectively transmitted. In addition, the author of the thesis found that three translators translated the warm aspects of human nature related with wine culture in an energetic way.It can be seen that in an era of Chinse culture “going out”,some aspects of the image of Chinese wine have not been transmitted in an effective way. There is a suggestion of the way to effectively transmit the image of Chinese wine and ShuihuZhuan for western readers to have a better understanding of Chinese culture.
