With the rapid development of our country ' s economy and the globalization tendency,English has become a universal language around the world,which makes English one of the most popular languages.Therefore,there is a growing need for English learning.Besides,in English learning,reading comprehension has been playing a vital role.In real English teaching process,the students' reading ability has been an important criteria used to rate their English levels.The New Curriculum Teaching Outline points out that to heighten the students ' reading ability is the most important task in English teaching.In China,students begin learning English in Grade seven,who improve their reading ability mainly depending on classroom learning.However,traditional classroom English reading teaching focuses on the explanation of vocabulary and sentence structures,in which case it' s hard for the students' reading skills to be strengthened.Therefore,how to improve the students' reading ability and how to help students grasp the main idea,structure and details of an article quickly is a question which needs solving for linguists at home and abroad.In the 1980s,the Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)aimed at arousing English reading interest and improving English ability rose in response to the proper time and conditions.TBLT attaches importance to being student-centered and advocates“learning by doing ".With the help of the teachers,the students find and conclude rules,exercise what they have learned by complementing a series of tasks.After years of application and research,TBLT has been proved to be an effective way to improve students' reading ability.Linguists at home and abroad have done many researches on TBLT,most of which is limited to the application of TBLT.There is a lack of researches on the effectiveness of TBLT application,especially in senior high school English reading teaching.The purpose of this thesis is to study the the application of TBLT in teaching English in senior high schools with the following two questions:(1)Is TBLT more effective than traditional teaching method in improving students'reading ability?(2)Can TBLT arouse students' interest in study and improve their study initiative.To answer the above two questions,the author selected the 120 students in Grade one of Xiannning middle school as experiment subjects and the process is from February to July in 2017,which lasted six months.Class two Grade one is the experimental group and Class one Grade one is the control group.Before the experiment,the author tested the two groups.The results of the test is checked by SPSS,showing that the reading ability of the two class is similar.Afterwards,the author used TBLT in Class two Grade one.In Class one Grade one,the author applied traditional teaching methods.After twenty weeks,the auhor tested the two class again.Having been tested by SPSS,the results showed that the reading ability of the two class is apparently different.This result proved my hypothesis that TBLT can better improve the students' reading ability than traditional teaching.Then,the author surveyed the students of the two classes.The results are tested by Chi-Square Test.They show that the students in Class two Grade one are more motivated and interested in English.To avoid any mistake,the author chose eight students in the two classes randomly and the results are consistent with those of the questionnaire.Through pre-test,post-test,and questionnaires,I got related data and analyzed them.The findings are as follows:1.In reading teaching in senior high school,TBLT can better improve students'reading levels than traditional teaching methods,which proves the rationality and effectiveness of TBLT.2.TBLT can promote students' learning initiative,arouse their interest and therefore improve English reading ability.
