Project Report On The Consecutive Interpretation Of The Eighth Amity International Seminar On Autism&Workshop On Field Skill In Autism Education

Public speakers usually employ some humorous utterances to enliven the atmosphere so as to produce more interesting talks in cross-cultural communication.However,interpreting humorous utterances has always been a challenge for interpreters.The reporter worked as a consecutive interpreter for an occupational therapist of autism in the Eighth Amity International Seminar on Autism&Workshop on Field Skill in Autism Education from October 14th to 15th,2017.After interpretation,the reporter reflected and found that how to interpret humorous utterances was one relatively new difficulty during the process.With the examples from the recorded data,this project report analyzes four barriers the reporter encountered in interpreting humorous utterances,namely,lack of knowledge about the laughter-making mechanism of humor,poor distribution of attention,improper emotional control and unfamiliarity with the accent of the lecturer.Drawing upon the reporter's interpretation experience and theoretical study,the reporter proposes four solutions accordingly:learning the laughter-making mechanism of humor,distributing attention in a reasonable way by means of omission and improving short-term memory,controlling emotions properly by setting up a correct interpretation motive and delaying laughter and getting familiar with the accent of the lecturer beforehand by listening to audio materials with an accent.The research findings in this project report may assist interpreters in handling the interpretation of humorous utterances better so as to improve the efficiency and quality of interpretation and also facilitate cross-cultural communication.
