Admittedly the research of E.M.Forster's masterpiece A Passage to India, has been reached to a huge number in the domestic and abroad,on the basis of the relevant information, the author of this thesis finds since the novel was published in 1924,it had always been treated as a liberal criticism on British social life, politics in India and the novelist's existential meditation by the critics and western readers. From the beginning, the novel has been perceived as an anti-colonial text, however, with the introduction and rapid advancement of the post-colonial criticism, the critics began to interpret the Forster's masterpiece from a new perspective—the imperialism narrative. The novel was also mentioned as the embodiment of Orientalism. This thesis aims to research the expressive techniques of Surrealism in a mode of fantasy-symbolism,mysterious rhythms and prophecy than can be derived from the analysis of the thematic diversity and nationality issue.Fantasy symbolism emphasizes the artistic characteristics and writing intention of Forster's novel;the mysterious rhythms emphasize the narrative techniques, the friction and blend of different cultures in the Forstcr's novel;the prophecy emphasizes the thematic sublimation of Forster's novels. The interaction among the three, factors contributes to the changing narrations, multiple characters and diverse themes of Forster's novel.Through prudent reading, the author finds that the principles of surrealistic skills can be divided into three aspects, including special characters, accumulation of images and the use of unconsciousness. The special characters(characters in mythology, ghost and strange flat characters)reinforce the mysterious atmosphere of the novel and express the mood and emotion that is difficult to be captured with words.Accumulation of images:water and fire—the repetition and variation of images;caves, echo and snake—the image of random juxtaposition;Hindu festival and boat collision—the image transformation. It gives hints, arouses association and creates beauty. The use of unconsciousness is separated into three sections:the metaphor of dream;the metaphor of sex and the dilemma of religious faith.Foiling the connection theme of the novel and revealing philosophy.Through the research of the thesis it can be pointed out that the use of surrealistic writing techniques enable the story more to be fufilled, the characters more vividly, the rhythms more delicately, the plots more fascinating. Thus it can deepen the themes of novel and enrich the writing skills.
