As one of the most famed British writers,Ian McEwan is fond of science and has been trying to explore its impacts on modern society in his enormous works, which shows his strong sensitivity towards this field.McEwan uses his rich scientific knowledge and excellent writing skills to present a number of vivid scientific events. He also explores the negative effects of science on modern people’s sense of the world. To help humans eliminate their misunderstandings of the world,he constantly tries to alarm those who have strong but blind reliance on science by providing positive guidance. This thesis analyzes the negative effects of science on modern humans and their false dependence on science by combining the relevant literary writing techniques with the contents of Enduring Love, and discusses how to face and solve daily issues. The introduction first looks into Ian McEwan and his writing achievements, then it presents domestic and overseas research findings of McEwan’s works, finally it explains the overall arrangement of this thesis. The first chapter constructs the triangle opposition(science, literature and religion)among the characters. And the triangle relationship is presented through the nonlinear narrative, which lays the foundation for the development of the later plot. The second chapter discusses McEwan’s use of the unreliable narration. On the one hand, the aerostatic theory can be proved infeasible because it fails to explain its tragic occurrence;on the other hand, the first-person narrator is likely to present the story partially, which also adds an additional unreliable feature to the development of the story. The dual plot setting makes the content better in line with the theme of thesis. On top of that, the third chapter presents McEwan’s scientific sensitivity by the pastiche of combining a De Clerambault case with the letters of a psychopath.By taking advantage of the conflicts among the three characters, science accelerates the breakup of the triangle relationship in the end.By means of his overall employment of three literary writing techniques and settings,McEwan demonstrates his concern upon the modern society incisively. In today’s fast-growing and ever-changing society,he fears that current people’s blind dependence on science would lead to a partiality in human minds. He warns people against solving problems exclusively with scientific knowledge.Consequently,McEwan tries to alert people that they should keep honest and sincere hearts with each other rather than being rigidly dependent on scientific knowledge when handling daily issues.
