With the definition of narrative becoming broader and the rising variety of narrative medium in the time of post-narrative,poetry narrative as a unique kind of narrative has been gradually put on the narrative research agenda, and more and more attention are paid to the study of the narrativity of poetry by many scholars who make effort to construct the poetry narratology. As for the poems in Hong Lou Meng, which is the masterpiece of Chinese novel, embodies a strong narrativity that plays an important role in promoting the narratives of the whole novel.Based on the social narrative theory of Mona Baker and the detailed analysis of David Hawkes' translation of poetry in Hong Lou Meng, this thesis mainly deals with the narrative reframing strategies adopted in Hawkes' translation and the relative narrative effect it represents so as to explore the applicability of Mona Baker's theory in poetry translation area as well as to figure out how the translator reconstructs the narrative framework of poetry to exert impacts on the cultural conflicts through temporal and spatial framing, framing through selective appropriation, framing by labeling and repositioning of participants.Specifically, this study mainly adopts Mona Baker's four reframing strategies to analyze the translation of poems in Hong Lou Meng. The methods adopted in this thesis are case study, literature researches and interdisciplinary research.Through the detailed analysis of the translation text, the combination of the latest development of narratology, and taking the reader's effect in narrative construction into consideration, the thesis has carried out an all-round study by absorbing the relevant knowledge from poetics, translation studies and narratology.According to study, the thesis finds that in face of the conflict context amongculture, religion and social consciousness,Hawkes actively adopts various effective narrative reconstruction strategies to reframe the original narrative.Even though the original narratives are deconstructed, yet the reconstruction of the original narratives in the process of translation yields the similar narrative effects.Being applied into the poetry translation area, the four framework strategies proposed by Baker gained new interpretations and additions. The poetic reframing strategy was then advanced in light of the poetic narrative feature of poetry with its specific implementation ways and relative case studies offered.Introducing the narrative theory into the study of poetry translation, this thesis brings new enlightenment and reflection to the study of poetry translation and makes a contribution to the construction of the poetry narratology.
