| Serving as the eye of news reporting,headline is an integral part of news.The use of metaphor can make news headlines more plentiful and vivid.Through the literature review,the author found that the study of conceptual metaphor in news discourse mainly involves politics and economics,and recently some studies focus on sports news,while there are few researches concerning football.Football is one of the most popular sports in the world and widely concerned by people.With the approaching of 2018 World Cup,the relevant news reports about this football feast will certainly attract tremendous attention.Thus,it is of great practical significance to study conceptual metaphor in English and Chinese football news headlines from the perspective of linguistics.This thesis makes a contrastive analysis of metaphorical cognition in English and Chinese football news within the framework of conceptual metaphor theory,with an application of data statistics and sample test.Based on the qualitative and quantitative research method,the study aims to answer the following questions: 1.How many types of metaphor can be classified in English and Chinese football newsheadlines? 2.What are the similarities and differences of metaphorical expression in the English andChinese football headlines? What are the reasons of the similarities and differences?In order to accomplish this thesis,about 2,000 English and Chinese football news headlines have been collected from online publications from August 2017 to December 2017,and the contents include 2018 FIFA World Cup,UEFA Champion League and Chinese Super League.The author repeatedly read each headline and marked headlines with conceptual metaphor with the help of Steen's(1999)identification criterion.The collected data can be classified into several categories according to conceptual metaphors theory.The author analyzes the mapping process of each category,detects their similarities and differences and explores the reasons lying behind.The major findings of this thesis are shown as follows:Firstly,in the collected data,552 metaphorical expressions in English headlines and 839 metaphorical expressions in Chinese headlines are found.Conceptual metaphor is ubiquitous in English and Chinese football news headlines,which further illustrates the universality of conceptual metaphor.Secondly,conceptual metaphor in English and Chinese football news headlines can be classified into three categories according to Lakoff and Johnson,including Structural Metaphor,Orientational Metaphor and Ontological Metaphor.And then each of them is further divided into several subcategories,including War metaphor,Journey metaphor,Drama metaphor,Nature metaphor,Animal metaphor,School metaphor,Commerce metaphor,Supernatural metaphor,Up-down Metaphor,Entity Metaphor,Container Metaphor and Personification.Moreover,it is found that the structural metaphor is the most frequently used category and the metaphorical expressions of war are widespread in both English and Chinese football news headlines.Thirdly,through the descriptive statistical analysis and Z TEST,it is found some commonness of conceptual metaphor in English and Chinese football news headlines.The similarity is mainly reflected in the following aspects: the same working mechanism,the common cognitive material basis,the universality of human thinking and the similar physical experience.There are also some differences between English and Chinese football news headlines,which is shown in different thinking models,different values and different culture conventions.This thesis aims to extend the research field of conceptual metaphor and provides a new angle of news discourse study.At the same time,the result of this study can give some references for the news editors to create more classical writing for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup,and readers can learn from this thesis to deepen their understanding of football. |
