A Study Of Mock Impoliteness In Female Intimate's Conversations:from Adaptation Theory Perspective

Communication is a process that represents some major differences according to the cultural dynamics involved.To promote a harmonious society,studies on politeness and its language function have received much scholar's attention,while the linguistic significance of impoliteness is less attended.Verbal impoliteness among a specific community,such as girl groups,is far less addressed.In fact,the complex and elusive nature of impoliteness makes of the interpretation the ultimate frontier in verbal communication.This paper is designed with two main objectives.The first one is to bring into focus the theoretical review of mock impoliteness,with special regard to the linguistic feature in conversations among intimate,especially girl friends.The second one is to explore the strategies of mock impoliteness,and to justify their linguistic validity and communicative effectiveness,with a collection of samples from well-received TV series(Broken Girls;Ode to Joy;Tiny Times).There are also source samples selected from authentic verbal discourse.This paper has investigated mock impoliteness among intimate girl friends,exploring language strategies of women discourses and their intentions in the employment.It aims at three questions: what's the mock impoliteness strategies the intimate girl friends would employ? What's the discourse feature in girl's mock impoliteness? What's the speaker's motivation of mock impoliteness ?The method of sample analysis is based on the investigation of both linguistic and social function of mock impoliteness.It is also guided under the Verschueren's Adaptation Theory.In order to comb out the interlink between utterance and speakers,a substantial part of the study is to make sense of the characters,words,and phrases involved.Based on the research and careful analysis the data collected,the major findings are as follows: mock impoliteness is quite a popular way of verbal communication applied by majority of girls in order to enhance close relationships within.The degree of indirectness increases when the addressee is socially superior and vice versa.And it is found that speeches become more direct,impolite or even offensive when the speaker wants to show intimacy;and,the increase in imposing mock and impolite language on the addressee is an indication of enhanced intimacy and mutualunderstanding between friends.And the research provides a further understanding of particular gender group interaction from their specific discourse and linguistic appreciation.And interestingly,the employed strategy of mock impoliteness is varied and can be generally resolved into offensive-offensive pattern and offensive-defensive pattern.In particular,the speaker's use of mocks or impoliteness is rather triggered with varied intentions for certain specific adaptation function.The research of mock impoliteness model from the collected materials will give us a broader view of language in use and in interpretation.
