The Rosenthal Effect also called Pygmalion Effect is an important concept in Educational Psychology,which is of great significance to the school teaching,that is,the good expectancies and love teachers hold about their students can improve the students' academic achievements.English teaching in middle school has its own characteristic.In the course of learning,the phenomenon of the students with poor English learning achievements commonly existed and they were called English underachievers here.The existence of the English underachievers not only restricts the improvement of English teaching,but also has a negative impact on students' future development.Therefore,how to improve their English learning achievements and how to promote their positive transformation is a major topic for the middle school English teachers.This paper mainly adopted the methods of literature,questionnaires,case analysis to further study the application of the Rosenthal Effect in the transformation of the English underachievers in junior middle school.The purpose of this study is to improve the current situation of the English underachievers in junior middle school.The research subjects were 30 students with poor English achievements in grade seven from Puyang NO.3 Middle School.The main research question in this paper is whether the application of the Rosenthal Effect in teaching can improve the learning interest and learning achievements of the English underachievers in junior middle school.The 30 selected English underachievers' learning process was intervened by the Rosenthal Effect for one semester.That is,teachers should fully respect the individual differences of the students and hold positive expectations on them.During the teaching process,teachers should be good at discovering their shining points and encourage them timely to enhance their confidence in their study.Before and after the experiment,they were asked to do a questionnaire survey about the English learning interest and the results of these two investigations were collected as the pre-test and post test data.Their two final English exam scores before and after the experiment were also collected as the pre-test and post-test data for the experiment.The above two groups of experimental data were tested by paired samples T test with SPSS19.0.From the data analysis,it can be drawn that the application of the Rosenthal Effect in teaching had a significant effect on the improvement of the English learning interest and English achievements of the English underachievers in junior middle school.
