With the acceleration the globalization and the increasing degree of the internationalization of politics, the critical discourse awareness in translation studies is being given a high attention. As an important means and channel for a country to introduce its own national conditions and national policies,as well as its development and changes to the world, political publicity text has a strong political complexion and is influenced by the state ideology. Therefore, compared with other types of translation, the translation of political publicity text has a higher standard, requiring it not only to be faithful to the original text, which can fully and accurately represent the contents of the source text, but also to make the corresponding adjustment appropriately after the consideration of ideological differences.Critical discourse analysis(CDA),a discourse analysis mode on the basis of functional linguistics, provides a new and good perspective for us to conduct the translation study of publicity text.CDA discusses the underlying ideology and power relations in the discourse, revealing the influence of ideology on discourse, the counteraction of discourse exerting on ideology, how they derive from the social structure and how to make power relations to serve discourse and ideology as well through the analysis of linguistic forms. The present thesis, choosing both the Chinese version and English version of New Progress in the Legal Protection of Human Rights in China as the object of study,a white paper issued by the State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China, conducts the comparative analysis of these subtle differences between the Chinese and English version from "Classification","Modality",and "Transformation".With the help of the theory of three-dimensional critical discourse analysis set up by Fairclough and the systemic functional grammar put forward by Halliday, the implied social-cultural context and ideological elements which result in those differences in the translated version are interpreted and explained. The thesis is mainly divided into five chapters:chapter one mainly gives a brief introduction of research background, research objectives and significance,as well as the major structure of the thesis;chapter two is literature review, sorting out some previous application of CDA&SFG in translation studies and previous translation studies on political publicity texts;chapter three focuses on theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis:Fairclough's three dimensional framework and Halliday's systemic functional grammar;and based on the theoretical framework of the previous chapter, chapter four makes a concrete comparative analysis of both Chinese and English version;as for the chapter five,it presents exploration and conclusion on the basis of comparative study. The results of the study finds that ideology has great influence on the process of translating political publicity text, showing that CDA can not only be applied into the translation of political publicity text, but also help us better explore how the hidden ideological elements, except linguistic factors, affect the translation practice of political publicity text as well as readers' acceptance.Such exploration is in favor of helping translators better understand the relationship between translation, politics, power and ideology, learn to use a more appropriate and acceptable means of translation to present ideology, and then enhance the translation quality of our country's political publicity text, create our national image.
