Charles Dickens(1812-1870),a famous British writer in Victorian age,had composed 14 and a half novels, and other forms of literature, including notes, poetry, plays, short stories, essays, speech collections.Dickens lived in the time when British Empire became the world's largest colonial empire and his works had depicted the social state and the people from the different level, especially the underclass. What's more,Dickens gave considerable attention to the colonial expansion of the empire in his writing. The his colonial writings mainly include the rise of Britain's Maritime Colonization, the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny, colonial plunder and slavery,as well as the tragic status of colonial immigrants. In the course of a series of colonial writings,Dickens had also used some especial techniques of expression:combining the colonial reality with the colonial imagination, comprehensively describing the colonial cause of the empire from the perspective of imperial inspection and alien inspection, and interpreting the colonial predicament of the empire through religious metaphor,so as to explain his unique thinking on the colonial issue. The motivation for his colonial works is mainly due to the theoretical consciousness of a realistic writer and the constraints of The Times. In addition, the literary tradition of British writers' colonial works is also an important reason for Dickens's colonial writing.Dickens's colonial scripts had showed the characteristics of a kind of contradiction.Due to the influence of The Times and the influence of his own class standpoint,Dickens was limited and narrowed in thinking about colonization, race, class and national identity, but he was always overcoming his ideological deficiencies, constantly updating and correcting some of his extreme thoughts, and always insisted on the humanitarian stance in his works,to express his sympathy for those who suffered from the sufferings in colonial history.Dickens' colonial writing has not only inherited the literary tradition of the former British writers' colonial writing, but also influenced the colonial writing of many British writers later. At the same time, colonial writing is also the embodiment of Dickens as a"social soul engineer",showing his concrete concern for every individual in society, especially the people at the bottom of society.
