Biancheng is the representative work of the famous modern Chinese writer Mr.Shen Congwen, and the novel plays a prominent role in the history of modern Chinese literature. It was based on the border town named Chatong in Xiangxi in the 1930s,which describes the particular local flavor of Xiangxi district and depicts the complicated love story of a girl named Cuicui between Tianbao and Nuosong.Due to its charm in meaningful words and unique local flavor, many readers and scholars at home and abroad have paid great attentions to its connotation in various spheres.Shen Congwen stuck to his reflections on human being's living statement and gave his works to convey the connotation of respecting nature and life.He made "Biancheng"beyond the usual geographical concept to become the meaningful exploration to the existent meaning of human life and spirit, and especially the existence for a woman and her relation with the nature;at the same time Chatong is the home where man lives in harmony with nature. His works has thus become the classic texts for eco-feminist criticism.Eco-feminism theory originates from the ecological movement and the feminist movement.Eco-feminism integrates the concepts of nature and the fate of women and holds that the relationship between women and nature is similar to that between men and women. It thus appeals to break down the patriarch outlook and rebuilds the human society based on the principles of ecology and feminism,so that nature is no longer exploited and women can be liberated. In light of the eco-feminism theory, this thesis chooses the two representative English versions of Biancheng by the famous translator Gladys Yang,Yang Xianyi(1981)and the American sinologist Jeffrey C.Kinkley(2009)to carry out a comparative study. The author attempts to explore how the English versions reflect Shen Congwen's eco-feminist ideology in theory and practice and tries to evaluate the comprehensive strategies for the eco-feminism reconstruction in the two English versions. The contents of this thesis can be divided into three parts, including the introduction, the main body and the conclusion.the introduction part displays research background, research purpose, difficulties, creative points and the structure of this thesis. The main body includes four chapters.Chapter one introduces the literature review of the current researches on eco-feminism and the previous researches on two English versions of Biancheng at home and aboard.Chapter two is the theoretical framework, including a brief introduction of eco-feminism,the contents of eco-feminism.Chapter three is about Biancheng and its translators, which introduces an overview of translation features concerning literature works and their translation views based on their abundant practice, and the eco-feminism connotation embodied in Biancheng.Chapter four is the main part of the thesis. Many typical examples are chosen from Biancheng to analyze the translators' representation of eco-feminism in different aspects in the original text in detail:the features, feelings, personalities of the female character and the features of different translators as well as the strategies translators adopted in the translating process, especially the eco-feminist consciousness embodied in their versions.Differences between the two English versions are summarized after comparison. The conclusion part sums up:the two English versions are recreating the original beauty in their unique language style. However, the eco-feminist awareness of Kinklcy's version is more intensive than Gladys Yang's version.Kinkley focuses more on the details to convey to the hues of eco-feminism.He is more sensitive to female's feelings and more aware of employing appropriate translation strategies to show his eco-feminist consciousness. As the study of two English versions of Biancheng demonstrates,to a certain degree eco-feminism theory can be applied to explain the translations of Chinese literature works. This not only enriches the translations studies of Biancheng, but also is a meaningful study.
