The European colonial era has ended for a long time, but the colonial legacy still exists nowadays.Scholars begin to study the nature and influence of colonial culture and politics from the past to the future, gradually forming a complete postcolonial system. The texts of the colonial era have demonstrated real colonial history for contemporary scholars, and they are of great significance for the deconstruction of colonial binary and colonial authority.Joseph Conrad is one of the representative writers. He takes the novel Nostromo as a canvas to show us the tragedy of an enormous Empire and the revolutionary journey taken by the colonized to resist colonial aggression. Therefore, putting Conrad's works in the context of postcolonial context for discussion can contribute to possible solutions to the fierce conflicts in the postcolonial time. This thesis applies the method of text analysis to study Joseph Conrad's Nostromo, combined with the postcolonial theory of Homi K.Bhabha.The research purposes of the thesis are to study the colonial ambivalence in Nostromo,to determine the existence of Joseph Conrad's postcolonial thinking in his novel Nostromo through text analysis and to explore the elements that deconstruct colonial binary.According to Bhabha's theories of ambivalence and hybridity, the thesis will analyze the text from three perspectives: split of government implementation, cultural variation in transmission, and conflict between the colonists and the colonized. For the split of government implementation, the author focuses on the ideal management and practical management of the Sulaco government. In terms of the cultural variation, the author discusses the promotion of Christianity in the colony and the acceptance of natives. When discussing the conflict between the colonists and the colonized, the author analyzes the colonial binary between the colonists and the colonized together with the binary deconstruction.Meanwhile, the author tries to analyze the hybridity in the mentioned three aspects and illustrate its influence on colonial authority and colonial power. Also, the article aims to present Conrad's postcolonial thinking through the above analysis. The study shows Conrad's postcolonial thinking in Nostromo, including his understanding of colonial governance, colonial culture and colonial conflict.Rereading Nostromo plays an important role in exploring the colonial binary and its deconstruction. The novel foresees the current situation of globalization and many postcolonial issues. To Conrad,it seems that there is ambivalence and hybridity in colonial governance, colonial culture and colonial racial conflict,in which the ambivalence and the hybridity have deconstructing effects on colonial authority and colonial power.Rereading colonial texts and constructing new texts are an important trial in resolving conflicts in the postcolonial period. This advocates the once colonized nations to reducing their dependence on the former colonial powers. This also enables the general public to understand the nature of colonization and helps with the promotion of equal political and cultural status among nations, thus deconstruct colonial authority and the Western Centrism.
