The Use Of Ellipsis In English-chinese Translation

The report is based on translating A History of Canada,which mainly tells about over 300 years'history of Canada from the 17~thh century to the 19~thh century.Because the original book is a historical text,the author uses a large number of long and difficult sentences to describe the historical facts.However,it will lead to some redundant information in target text to translate the source text word for word.In order to make the translation structure more concise,highlight the key information and express the meaning and culture of English faithfully and fluently,it is necessary for the translator to use ellipsis sometimes.The report analyzes all kinds of ellipsis phenomena during the process of transferring from English to Chinese from the perspectives of notional words ellipsis,functional words ellipsis and clausal ellipsis under the guidance of the principle of economy.The report is divided into four parts.The first part is the summary of the task,mainly introducing the translation task and its significance.The second part describes the three processes of pre-translation preparation,process of translation and proofreading.The third part mainly talks about the examples'analysis and it's the core part of the report.The author uses typical cases to explore the application of ellipsis skill and sums up the suitable scope of all kinds basing on the principle of economy of AndréMartinet.The last part is the conclusion,summarizing the author's experience and lessons in this translation practice.
