The Sydney Herald was founded in 1831 and renamed the Sydney Morning Herald in 1841.The Sydney Morning Herald is the earliest commercial newspaper in Australia. In 1853,Fairfax took over the Sydney Morning Herald. His editorial policy is "integrity, honesty and honor as the principle, not misleading, not subject to interest".Since nearly 150 years, the newspaper has been controlled by the Fairfax family. The Sydney Morning Herald is the oldest newspaper ever published in Australia and one of the most influential newspapers in Australia. The newspaper often publishes news sent by foreign correspondents and various news in the world. It can also independently evaluate government decisions. For a long time, the Sydney Morning Herald was influenced by British newspapers in terms of form and content selection. This article uses the reports of the Australian newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald from 1894 to 1895 about the First Sino-Japanese War.It aims to systematically review the reports about the war, analyze the reporting preference and balance,in order to explore the true extent of reports, analyse the reason of influencing newspaper reports, and give an objective historical evaluation. This article is divided into five parts:The first part focuses on the timeline, and sorts out reports on the war intentions of Japan, the pre-war situation in North Korea, and the comparison of strength between China and Japan by the Sydney Morning Herald. The second part focuses on the specific reports on the war in the Sydney Morning Herald, mainly including the Pyongyang Campaign, the Yellow Sea Battle, the fall of Port Arthur and the fall of Weihaiwei. The third part mainly introduces the follow-up reports of the Sydney Morning Herald after the end of the war.It is divided into the reasons for Japan's victory,Japan's strategic objectives, the signing of the Sino-Japanese Treaty, and Japan and Russia. The fourth part mainly analyzes the true extent of reports. After relevant research,it can be argued that the reports of the Sydney Morning Herald on the Battle of Pungdo, the Koshing Incident and Port Arthur Massacre have been untrue and have been seriously biased. The fifth part mainly discusses the factors affected the reports of the Sydney Morning Herald, including the factors affected the objectivity of the report and the report position. The Sydney Morning Herald was biased toward Japan in its coverage. The key factor affected the position of reports is the issue of values. In a word, limited by various factors of the times, mainly based on narrow cultural biases, the reports of the Sydney Morning Herald about the First Sino-Japanese War was injustice and distorted, which derogated from news report principles of objectivity, authenticity and neutrality.
