In the early days of the People’s Republic of China,there are as many as two or three hundred british companies in China.However,this number has been reduced to just a dozen in 1954 because of the changes in the international and domestic environment.Although these companies have different situations and fortunes,the fate of them after the founding of the New China still has some common features.Only through in-depth and concrete investigation and analysis of the experiences of these companies can we clarify and understand this historical process.This thesis,based on both Chinese and British archives,takes the Kailan Mining Administration,the largest Sino-British joint venture at that time,as the research object,and conducts a detailed analysis of the incident of taking over it.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,this article is divided into three chapters.The introductory part mainly talks about research topics,relevant research background,research historical materials,methods,etc.The first part mainly deals with the difficulties faced by the Kailan Mining Administration before and after liberation and the attitude of the British side.With the continued war,the administration began to fall into a predicament,but at this time the British chief manager had an optimistic attitude towards the future.At the beginning of the liberation,these difficulties of the mine has not diminished at all and Pryor,who used to be optimistic,was no longer positive about the future.The second part mainly discusses the interaction between the mine and the Chinese Government after liberation.In order to solve the plight of the mine,the side of mine have repeatedly requested assistance from all levels of government.Through the convening of consultative meetings between labour and management of the mine,the Chinese Government provided assistances to Kailan.However,these agreements have not been effectively implemented due to a variety of factors.As a result,these assistances failed to change the plight of the mine.Therefore,the British chief manager completely lost hope for the future of company.The third part discusses the process of the British people’s initiative to give up their shares.In view of the expiry of the mining license,the British side has repeatedly proposed to the Chinese government the transfer of their shares,but the latter has never responded.Finally,the British chief manager returned to Britain and actually gave up the Company’s shares,while the Chinese government did not formally manage the mine until two years later.The incident of taking over the Kailan Mining Administration is a typical case of China’s foreign capital and foreign company policy in the 1950 s and is worthy of thorough and in-depth discussion.Although the Chinese government has mastered much more initiatives,it has always failed to specify specific foreign capital policies,and thus there is no a so-called " Protracted Expropriation " tactic.Although the British manager is in a relatively weak position,he can also use various conditions to safeguard its own interests and has not become a hostage who can only remit money to China.The British government has never given any substantial assistance to the mine because of the weakness of his own strength and lacking of diplomatic relations with the Chinese government.
