Primary school is the initial stage of basic education to guide the students to love English,which is also the responsibility of all the English teachers in primary schools.Reading is the foundation of listening,speaking and writing.Learning motivation is the internal state of building and maintaining learning behavior.English learning motivation of primary school students has a great influence on English reading ability.Based on the above reasons,the author carried out an investigation on the influence of students' English learning motivation on their reading ability,hoping to find out effective strategies to improve primary school students' English reading ability through investigation and analysis.The author wants to achieve the following objectives by this research.1)Using the theory of learning motivation to guide students' English reading.2)From the perspective of cognitive theory,investigating and analyzing the relation between English learning motivation and English reading ability in primary schools.3)Inspiring learning motivation to improve English reading ability.In order to make the study objective and authentic,the author selected a rural primary school in Shanghai as the research object.166 students in the fourth and fifth grades of the school conducted detailed questionnaires,interviews,investigations and analysis about English learning motivation and English reading ability.The results of the study show: 1)Gender has no significant effect on primary school students' English learning motivation and reading ability.2)Students' English learning internal motivation has a greater influence on reading ability than external motivation.3)Curiosity and imagination are the main internal motivations that affect primary school students' English reading ability.4)Influence on English reading ability from emotional rewards is greater than material rewards.5)Impact of punishment other than rewards influences English reading ability more.This article also discussed the strategies that motivate students to learn English and improve their reading ability in detail,including: 1)equal emphasis on internal and external motivation of learning English in Primary school.2)cultivating and maintaining students' curiosity and imagination on English learning.3)treating differently by rewards or punishments on English reading ability.4)paying more attention to the students' who are weak in reading,on the cultivation of the internal and external English learning motivation.The disadvantage of this paper is that the sample size of the study is small.Additionally,the sample school is a rural primary school and does not represent the overall findings of all Shanghai primary schools.
