A Comparative Study Of Spatial Narrative Between Half Of Man Is Woman And Lady Chatterley's Lover

Both Zhang Xianliang and D.H.Lawrence used to be quite controversial writers,but their works have been highly appreciated and have raised enthusiasm of study for scholars worldwide later.Although having difference in space and culture,they have similar attitudes towards looking for ideal life styles.A lot of researches have been done on the works of Zhang Xianliang and D.H.Lawrence respectively but there is no comparative study of spatial narration between Half of Man Is Woman and Lady Chatterley's Lover.Therefore,the thesis will attempt to have a comparative study of the two novels,Zhang Xianliang's Half of Man Is Woman and D.H.Lawrance's Lady Chatterley's Lover,from the perspective of spatial narrative theory.Novels are not only a kind of time art,but also a spatial art.And spatial narrative theory has the innovative value in studying literary works,so in order to increase possibilities of interpretation in literature works,it is necessary for us to apply this theory.By using Gabriel Zoran and Henri Lefebvre's spatial theory,this thesis aims to comparatively analyze the structure of space and its function to explore the same theme--Resisting the distorted society with sexual love.Chapter One briefly introduces Zhang Xianliang and D.H.Lawrence's life and their works,and discusses the domestic and foreign studies of Zhang Xianliang's Half of Man Is Woman and D.H.Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover and spatial narrative theory.Then Chapter Two,Chapter Three,and Chapter Four make a detailed analysis and discussion of the two novels in light of the spatial narrative.Chapter Two analyzes the physical space,which consists of the physical environment formed by the characters' existence.Chapter Three analyzes the social space which consists of relationships among the characters.Chapter Four mainly analyzes psychological space.Finally,combing the analysis of the first four Chapters,Chapter five is the conclusion part,which makes an overview of the whole thesis from the previous discussion.
