English education of senior high school has been criticized for the low efficiency for a long time. One of the reasons rarely discussed is that English teachers in senior high schools misunderstand some students' needs of learning English. Therefore, there is a demand for English teachers to reduce the misunderstandings and adjust their teaching to satisfy students' needs of learning English. The Postmethod Pedagogy was proposed by Kumaravadivelu in 1994.It is a three-dimensional system consisting of pedagogical parameters: particularity, practicality and possibility,in which there is a request that both learners' pedagogical needs and social needs of learning English should be satisfied by English teachers. As a kind of open-ended,integrated,dynamic and flexible teaching idea not a concrete teaching method, the Postmethod Pedagogy becomes popular in China. While needs analysis refers to the activities involved in gathering information that serves as the basis for teaching that will meet the learning needs of a particular group of students.Generally, such information for the needs analysis is mainly gathered from questionnaires, interviews and observation. The needs analysis at first focuses on the field of the English for Specific Purpose, while more educators nowadays use its framework to analyze the middle or senior high school students' needs of learning English in China. In such a background, this thesis done in a senior high school in Hangzhou aims to investigate senior high school students' needs of learning English both from students' view and their English teachers' view by means of questionnaires, interviews and the class observation.According to Hutchinson and Waters' needs analysis theory, students' needs of learning English include target needs of learning English and learning needs of learning English. The author took 200 students from Grade 2 and 30 English teachers in a senior high school as research subjects. The questionnaires and interviews are designed under the Hutchinson and Waters' modelfor the needs analysis. The Reliability Alpha Coefficient of the questionnaire is 0.606 tested with SPSS 20.0 and the research data are analyzed with Excel 2007 mainly by the percentage.According to the results of quantitative data from the comparison between students' view and their English teachers' view on senior high school students' needs of learning English,it is found that some differences that reflect teachers' misunderstandings of their students' needs of learning English do exist, especially in terms of students' learning needs of learning English. In the research, the author found out four main reasons which cause the differences on the basis of the Postmethod Pedagogy. In addition, some students' needs of learning English which are not well satisfied are also found. On the basis of the Postmethod Pedagogy, the author provided four main macro measures for teachers in senior high schools to reduce the misunderstandings of their students' needs of learning English.Under Kumaravadivelu's macrostrategic framework, the author also provided eight concrete micro measures for teachers to adjust their teaching to satisfy their students' needs of learning English better and then improve the efficiency of English teaching and learning.
