The thesis analyzes the issue of trauma and redemption in Toni Morrison's tenth book Home.By analyzing the types of trauma and discussing methods of redemption,the thesis reveals the hardships and tribulations that African American people have suffered in the 1950 s.The thesis maintains that,by highlighting the healing effect of African American culture and emphasizing the importance of self-growth,Morrison expresses her concern and care for the survival of contemporary African American people.The thesis consists of five parts.The introduction section mainly deals with trauma theory,literature review both at home and abroad,the research purpose and significance of the thesis.Chapter One aims to explore personal trauma and redemption,especially Frank's psychological trauma and Cee's physical trauma.Focusing on the aspect of the protagonists' familial trauma,Chapter Two concludes that apathetic and estranged relationships are the origin of familial trauma.Chapter Three discusses racial trauma.African American people are the repressed “other” and are marginalized.By analyzing the trauma and redemption in the novel,the thesis draws the conclusion that only by attaining self-growth and upholding the traditional black culture can black people recover from trauma.Choosing the black community Lotus as a place where Frank and Cee complete their redemption,Morrison emphasizes the healing effect of traditional African American culture.
