Nowadays, almost every college student possesses a smartphone due to its powerful multi-functions and affordable price.Tremendous changes have happened in people's way to live and study because of smartphones, which further promotes the popularization of mobile learning. The emergence of mobile learning has received great enthusiasm from researchers and developers, and studies on college students' mobile learning have also achieved plenty of valuable results.Studies on college students' smartphone-based English listening mobile learning, however, are scarce. This research aims to investigate college students' smartphone-based English listening mobile learning(SBELML)from the perspective of the current situations of non-English major undergraduates' SBELML in Guilin. It might have some realistic significance. The survey was carried out by applying the research method of questionnaire and interview based on the constructivism, informal learning and autonomous learning. The subjects of this study are 288 sophomores randomly chosen from Guangxi Normal University,Guilin University of Technology and Guilin University of Electronic Technology.Dimensions in the questionnaire consist of students' attitudes toward SBELML,their SBELML frequencies, their preferences in SBELML and English learning strategies(ELSs)employed in SBELML.There are three research questions for this study,including(1)what is the current status of SBELML for non-English major sophomores in Guilin?(2)Are there any significant differences between liberal arts and science students, male and female students in their SBELML?(3)What might be the difficulties encountered in non-English major undergraduates' SBELML?The results of the study are as follows:(1)Students possess rather positive attitudes toward SBELML.Their SBELML frequencies are promising but unstable.Students also show quite clear preferences in their SBELML and they use ELSs at a medium level.(2)There are significant differences between liberal arts and science students, male and female students in their SBELML.Judging from the dimension of attitudes, frequencies, preferences and learning strategies employed in their SBELML,liberal arts students perform better than science students do,and female students also perform better than male students do.(3)The existing problems are as follows: Limited areas with free Wi-Fi constrain their SBELML;Students are lack of consistent inner motivations to improve English listening through SBELML;Students share weak interest in SBELML and do not know how to find interesting and suitable learning materials for themselves;Students have little awareness of learning strategies and systematical guidance on learning strategies.According to the study's results, the author gives suggestions for teaching and learning from the perspectives of colleges and universities, teachers and students, and also finds out the limitations in order to provide the future researches with helpful advice.
