The term “washback effect” has been widely used in the field of applied linguistics(especially in language testing and language learning),and the research on washback effect in this field is fruitful.HSK is an important test for learning Chinese as a second language.At present,however,there is little research on the washback effect of HSK.Scholars in this field have few research findings,neither theoretically nor empirically.The limited studies on HSK all focus on the washback effect of language teaching.As Hamp-Lyons pointed out,it is students who directly participate in the test and take risks of the test.Therefore,more efforts should be made to study the effect of HSK on students in terms of the preparing for test and the learning results.This thesis studies the Chinese learning of foreign students in China under the guidance of important theories on washback(mainly the Participants-Process-Product washback effect model put forward by Huguhes(1989).Based on the research results of and empirical approaches to language testing from home and abroad,the thesis attempts to study the effect of HSK(level V)on foreign students who learn Chinese in China.To be concrete,this thesis is supposed to give answers to these questions: How do foreign students in China evaluate HSK(level V);Will HSK(level V)influence the Chinese learning of foreign students in China;The mentality of examinee.This thesis adopts empirical study through questionnaire survey.Taking foreign students in the International College of C University who are preparing for or have passed HSK(level V)as the object of study,this thesis analyzes the effect of HSK(level V)on the Chinese learning of foreign students in China.As the result of SPSS analysis shows,HSK(level V)has washback effect on Chinese learners,generally in a positive way.To give play to the positive washback effect of HSK(level V)on Chinese learners and reduce its negative effect,the author provides some advice to foreign students who are preparing for HSK(level V).Treat the examination in a rational manner and don't worry too much about the examination,adjust mentality towards stress and examination results in a positive way,and adopt scientific learning behavior.There are deficiencies in this thesis due to the limited ability of the author,and corrections will be appreciated.
