Recently, the field of biomedical research is becoming the focus of all countries, and the ability to read and write RAs in English has been crucial for Chinese researchers to gain access to international academic world. We cautiously selected journals based on the principle of representativity, reputation, accessibility and timeliness, and 30 complete RAs in the field of clinical medicine, with the traditional IMRD format, written by native speakers both in English and Chinese were included. Then we made a detailed comparative genre analysis of the generic structures of the English and Chinese RAs in clinical medicine with reference to Swales'(1990)model of genre analysis and Nwogu's(1997)schema,with the aim of summarizing the common moves in each section of medical RAs and then exploring the similarities and differences in the generic structures between the two corpora. The results showed that the English and Chinese RAs in clinical medicine shared generally a similar generic structure, which was made up of eleven schematic units or "moves";but there were still some obvious differences in the frequency, sequence and length of these moves between the two corpora. The findings of the present study will provide some practical guidance for improving the reading and writing abilities of Chinese writers, and also help translators to use the generic stricture that are more favorable in the target language, thus improving the quality and acceptability of the translation.
