This proposal is based on the author's translation of the story She's Come Undone, which was the first novel of Wally Lamb,a talented American writer. The novel was an immediate success in the United States and many other parts of the world. The success is not only the result of its well-knitted plot and thought-provoking theme, but also the author's excellence in the manipulation of the English language.Nevertheless, after reading through the first two chapters of this novel, the translator found many long sentences are used, which are really difficult to understand and translate. As we know, one of the biggest differences between the English and Chinese languages is that the English language is characterized by parataxis while the Chinese language is featured by hypotaxis. In other words, long sentences are more frequently seen in English writings than in the Chinese. Therefore,in translating long sentences, translators must pay much attention to this remarkable difference between the two languages. In this thesis, the translator discusses some translation techniques of long sentences in the story She's Come Undone from the perspective of hypotaxis and parataxis and attempts to put forward some suggestions in the hope of assisting fellow translators. |
