The Research On Meaning Of Descriptions In The Perspective Of Situation Semantics

The meaning of Descriptions has been studied for more than a century since Russell started the research,but the research for descriptions,cared by Russell,Strawson,and Donnellan,is not perfect.The problems of these research are similar in some aspects,such as the confusion between the meaning of the descriptions and the reference of the descriptions,the problem of the mind and belief,and the vacuous descriptions.Although many philosophers pointed out those problems,they didn't solve them,one of which is the mental belief problem.General situation semantics includes the theory of situations,situation semantics,and the theory of attitudes,while narrow situation semantics means only the semantics of the meaning system.With the help of situation theory and the help of attitude theory,I take the theory of meaning system of situation semantics as the core,and I consider not the whole world but locations my research domain.Additionally,I try to solve the general problems of the descriptions in following ways: In the first place,I distinguish the meaning and the reference through situation semantics.In the guide of situation semantics,the meaning is considered the form of meaning,while the reference is taken as the content of meaning.Secondly,I try to focus on some aspects of mental domain and to find the specific ways to express convictions with the help of indexed event-types.Last but not least,through inner attributive use and the specific way to express condition,I try to solve the problems of vacuous descriptions,which are unclear reference.This paper uses comparative research and the unity of analysis and synthesis to compare different theories of descriptions,and finds out their problems.In addition,I analyze them by situation semantics.Finally,I achieved the purposes of the research which are to clarify the distinction between the meaning of the descriptions and the reference of the descriptions,to focus on the mental domain of the descriptions,and to confirm the reference of vacuous descriptions.
