The Jewish issue was one of the important themes in Russian literature of the 19 th century.Due to the differences in beliefs and customs, there were many contradictions between Jews and Russians.Since the 19 th century,Russian writers have attached great attention to Jews and Jewish issues. However, some Russian non-Jewish writers, represented by Pushkin,Gogol,Turgenev, hold certain prejudices against Jews and Jewish problems. And in the works of the Russian non-Jewish writers of the 19 th century, the prejudice was prominently manifested in the way that Jews usually appear as the images of usurers, spies, and so on.The confrontation and conflict between Jews and Cossacks,Jewish identity and assimilation were vital parts of Jewish issues in Russia in the 19 th century, which has drawn attention of both Russian non-Jewish writers and Jewish writers.Russian non-Jewish writers showed solicitude for the living conditions of Jews in Russian society. They described the conflicts between Jews and Russians and the Jewish assimilation in their works. And Russian non-Jewish writers believed that Jews were unable to integrate into Russian society by accepting assimilation on their own initiative. On the basis of their own life experiences,Russian Jewish writers represented by Sholem Aleichem and Pruzhansky focused on depicting the real life of the Jewish common people.Russian Jewish writers, like their protagonists, faced the same problem of dual identity and assimilation. In the writings of Russian Jewish writers, the Jewish assimilation was full of suffering and bitterness.
