Reading is a significant part in English teaching.Under the current English teaching model,many teachers use the traditional bottom-up reading model,which focusing on teaching vocabulary and grammar.However,the New Curriculum Standards put forward new requirements for English reading teaching.English reading teaching no longer merely teach language knowledge and activate language competence,but activate students' reading interest and cultural consciousness as well,therefore,it can enhance students' English level efficiently.Since the 1980 s,the schema theory was widely applied to foreign language teaching in China.Especially,in the process of using the schema theory to explain reading comprehension and analyze the reason why students can't comprehend the reading material.The researches of combing the schema theory with teaching case are rare.The purpose of the thesis is about to apply the schema theory into practice in the junior high school English reading teaching.By doing this research,it aims to find out how to activate students' existing schema to construct new schema with the guidance of the schema theory.Meanwhile,it combines with the teaching cases to analyze how to improve students' reading interest and reading competence.According to the case analysis based on the schema theory and the research instruments of questionnaires,pre-test and post-test,the author carries on the experiment to students of two classes of junior grade two in Xinxin foreign Language Experimental School of Guiyang.One is the controlled class(CC),and the other is experimental class(EC).Through the comparative analysis of the questionnaires,pre-test and post-test of students in CC and EC before and after the experiment,it is found that students' reading habit and vocabulary are the main elements that influence their reading ability.During the nearly four-month experimental period,students' English reading achievements of EC are obviously higher than that of the CC.To some degree,it is proved that English reading teaching based on schema theory is helpful to cultivate students' reading interests and to improve their English reading ability and English reading achievements as well.The application of the schema theory has positive effect on English reading teaching,but there are still some limitations in this study.After the case analysis,the thesis makes some suggestions for future teaching according to the existing problems.
