An Analysis Of Conflict Talks In Romance Of Our Parents From The Perspective Of Impoliteness Theory

Human society is a gregarious society.Due to the differences in values,life background,degree of education,and experiences of life,conflict talks are unavoidable in daily life.Conflict talk is a kind of utterance that is deliberate,opposite,and negative,so it is impolite to the recipient.At present,most of the studies about conflict talks focus on only one piece of relationship,such as couples,teacher-student,doctor-patient and so on.While this thesis employs Bousfield's impoliteness theory to analyze the conflict talks produced by people under more than one piece of relationships in Chinese TV series Romance of Our Parents aiming to find the types of impoliteness strategies and the differences of adoptions of these impoliteness strategies and response options by people.In order to realize these purposes,there are three questions needed to be answered in this thesis.(1)What impoliteness strategies can be found in the conflict talks of Chinese TV series Romance of Our Parents?(2)Are there any sub-types and characteristics of usage of these impoliteness strategies adopted in conflict talks?(3)What are the differences of adopting impoliteness strategies and response options in conflict talks by people under different relationships? What are the reasons of causing these differences?All the conflict talks are collected from Romance of Our Parents in which they occur in daily life and are caused by daily contradictions,so this type of TV series is closer to real life.Besides,conflict talks occur among people under different relationships,from which,this thesis can adopt the method of contrastive analysis to analyze the differences of adopting impoliteness strategies and response options by people under different relationships.There are the research procedures:(1)A large amount of literature on conflict talks and impoliteness theory is referred to,in order to pick out the most proper one and find out the study points for this study.(2)Data collection is done in this step.The detailed process is described in 4.3.(3)An analysis of conflict talks is made based on the impoliteness theory,by the following of each analysis,corresponding findings is presented.(4)The last step is the conclusion of this study.According to this study,there are 18 impoliteness strategies are adopted in the collected data,14 of which are from Bousfield's impoliteness theory.The other four are put forward by the author of this thesis: Belittle,Use abusive expression,Order and Be rascally.And some impoliteness strategies are made a more detailed division,at the same time their characteristics of usage are explored.Besides,this study finds that there are differences of adopting impoliteness strategies and response options by people under different relationships.In the relationship of couples,the number of impoliteness strategies adopted by the wife is much more than that by the husband,and they are more offensive and explicitly impolite than those of husband's.In the aspect of response options,the wife nearly employs the offensive strategies,which makes the conflict talks more intense and impolite.Facing the impoliteness strategies,the husband tends to adopt the defensive strategies to respond to it.The reason causing these differences between couples is: The wife is more emotional,while the husband is more calm and he has the willing to stop the conflict talks in most of the time.In the relationship of sisters-in-law,the number of the impoliteness strategies adopted by them is not greatly different,because their relationship is so less intimate than that of couples to have sympathy for each other and they are both women who have the talent in language to make the conflict talks more intense.However,as for the response options,the young sister-in-law's employment of offensive strategies is much more than that of the elder sister-in-law,because the young sister-in-law comes from a village and she is uneducated,so she is better at the unreasonable and intense quarrel.It should be noted that the impoliteness strategies of Use abusive expression,Use inappropriate identity markers and Condescend are only used by the elder sister-in-law.According to the Chinese tradition,the young sister-in-law should respect her elder sister-in-law at the moral level.The elder sister-in-law possesses the higher power and status than that of the young sister-in-law in a traditional Chinese family.So these devastating impoliteness strategies are more likely to be employed by the elder sister-in-law.
