Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger examines the problems that have emerged in the urbanization of Indian cities. This thesis focuses on the urban space production of India in The White Tiger by applying Henri Lefebvre's elaborations on production of space, including the relationship between urban space and village space, production of urban space and nature,as well as production of space and class conflicts. The thesis intends to analyze the antagonisms behind urban space production and the reasons behind these conflicts in terms of three binary oppositions between city and village, human and nature, and the upper class and lower class in the novel.Under the influence of western capitalism,India's urbanization has developed rapidly, this thesis argues Indian cities blindly pursue the speed and benefit, ignoring the balance of urban and rural development, ecological balance, and the contradictions between the rich and the poor, which puts India's urban space production in an imbalanced state.Through analyzing the unbalanced state of urban space production of India in the novel, this thesis considers the protagonist Balram is both the beneficiary and a victim of urbanization and globalization. His resistance is to gain more space rights. The extreme measure he takes indicates that in capitalist social space, capital comes above everything.Through Barlam's image,Adiga appeals for social justice as well as expresses his sympathy for the lower class people of India. He expects an Indian society that is more multi-cultural,more tolerant and fairer.
