At present,studies on the depth of vocabulary knowledge and language ability has mainly centered on the listening and reading in the field of second language acquisition,but studies on writing are rather small.Meanwhile,learners are poor in writing ability even though they spend a lot of time.Thus,this empirical study aims to investigate the current situation of depth of productive vocabulary knowledge and their performance in writing,and to explore whether the difference is significant in depth of productive vocabulary knowledge among different writing levels,and to discuss the correlation between depth of productive vocabulary knowledge and writing scores.Based on “word knowledge framework” proposed by Nation(1990),this paper conducts an empirical study to investigate the relationship between the depth of productive vocabulary knowledge and English writing ability among 75 CSC test-takers who receive training in XI SU.Productive vocabulary knowledge depth test and CSC writing test are used as research instruments.In productive vocabulary knowledge depth test,the derivative,synonym,antonym and collocation are tested for 20 target words.Through analyzing collected data by SPSS.20,three conclusions can be drawn: Firstly,the current situation of depth of productive vocabulary knowledge is far from medium level,and among four aspects,learners perform better in collocation than in derivative,synonym and antonym;Secondly,there is a significant difference in depth of productive vocabulary knowledge among different writing levels;Thirdly,depth of productive vocabulary knowledge and collocation are positively effective predictors to writing scores.The theoretical significance of this study not only enriches English teaching theories,but also provides some evidence for the relationship between depth of productive vocabulary knowledge and writing.The practical significance is that learners can improve English writing scores through strengthening depth of productive vocabulary knowledge.
