With the rapid development of international communication,English has become an important tool in communication.The College English Curriculum Requirements explicitly raises a higher requirement on developing students’ listening and speaking skills.Consequently,it is significant to choose an appropriate and good material for students.New Vision College English: Viewing Listening Speaking(second edition)is published by China Renmin University Press in 2015.It is used by some colleges of Guang Xi province at present.Nevertheless,there is no material that is fit for students totally,hence it is necessary to evaluate and choose appropriate material for students.This research makes an evaluation on this material by using methods of text analysis,questionnaire and interview to investigate its applicability on teachers and students of Guangxi Normal University Li Jiang College.The research subjects are sophomores and college English teachers.This research aims at solving three problems.Firstly,to what extent does this material meet the requirement of CECR and Syllabus for CET-4? Secondly,to what extent does this material meets needs of students? Thirdly,to what extent does this material meets needs of teachers? Results can be described as below.Firstly,this material satisfies CECR and CET-4 syllabus in aspects of topics,genres,oral skill and listening skill.In addition,the following aspects of materials can meet needs of students,such as consideration to exam and practical application of language,question types,amount of unit content,passage length,proportion of listening and speaking,consideration to Chinese and western cultures,edition design,illustration,sequencing of the material content,improving their listening ability,and topics.And thirdly,the following aspects of this materials can meet the needs of the teachers,such as,consideration to exams and practical application of language,meeting students’ needs to improve their listening ability,question types,consideration to Chinese and western culture,sequencing of the material content,paying attention to teach listening strategies.Moreover,topics,teachers’ book and teaching resource also obtain praise of them.Apart from this,some weaknesses of material is found out.Firstly,speaking speed of some listening material is beyond the speed of basic requirement of CECR.Secondly,some audio-visual materials are not very clear.According to results of this research,the author puts forward some suggestions for the students,teachers and compilers.As regard to students,they ought to enhance awareness of autonomous learning and do more oral practice.Besides,they should cultivate good learning habits and learn to use learning strategies.Second,teachers should spend more time on oral language practice in class and pay more attention to teach students some learning strategies.Furthermore,teachers should learn to change their teaching methods according to students’ needs,learning level and the teaching environment.Third,compilers should make some adaptation to materials.Such as,slow down the speaking speed of some listening materials;improve clarity of some audio-visual materials.In addition,the compiler may set up QR code on textbook to make it convenient for students to use self-study platform to do self-directed learning.
