Western painting has been deeply influenced by religious culture for six or seven hundred years,in this period of time,it has proceed its generation,development,prosperity and transition.Religious paintings are important means and methods for understanding the development of painting and Christian culture.The religious art works or related content elements more or less reflect the social,political,economic,cultural situation,and religious beliefs in different period of time,it's a visual way to record the human spiritual exploration process.The religious patterns,symbols and pictogram convey man's pursuit of spirituality beyond images,the pursuit of beliefs,the thought about life,and the attitude toward life and death.Different from the paintings of divine conservationunder Christian themes,the contemporary paintings advocating individual expressionand pureartistic form disregard of the connotation and sacredness of the works.Is this artistic phenomenon a kind innovation ? Is it the end of the art road? Is it aartistic paradigm? Or is it Human's nature spiritual?The value of art lies in the questioning of the ultimate value of life and death.Contemporary art requires spiritual expression to tap the value of art noumenon.After experiencing the artistic phenomenon which is too foamy,more and more artists focus on the connotation of the works,reviewing their thought and expression from the perspective of spiritual relevance,and making the “symbol” as their source of creation and inexhaustible motive force.As for art work alone,profound spiritual works usually depend on symbolic expressions of image elements.Given the different form and image elements,the effects and atmosphere presented by works are different although of the same theme and the same connotation.The iconography under the theme of Christ has undergone an evolutionary process from medieval to contemporary.The images depicted around the theme of the Bible are often mingled with a large number of factors of the specific epoch and the artist's self-image.Iconography is an important form of the Western Christian culture.By analyzing,categorizing,summarizing,and researching the use of these subjects and schemata of religious worksand different expressions at different times,in order to interpret the influence of spiritual beliefs on image schema and its transformation from a more comprehensive perspective,to analyze the symbolism of the new image of contemporary art,to explore the possibility and pattern of the value of art worksfrom the perspective of cultural diversity.Therefore,this article will discusses the process and evolution of symbolic schemata in iconographymainly focusing on the symbolism's development,conversion and its contemporary application of schema,and sorts out the artistic forms' evolution moments and its modes to reveal the application and significance of symbolism in contemporary artistic creation.
