Literary translation not only conveys the message of the original work, but also transfers the way in which the message is conveyed.Deviation is one of the important ways to highlight the original style. It improves the readability of literary works and embodies writers' talents of writing. Therefore, translation of deviation should not be ignored. However,in the process of translation, limits of translation is greatly increased due to linguistic and cultural differences between source and target languages. It causes the loss of translating deviation and failure to achieve the same effect as it does in the original work.Deviation challenge translators and sometimes keeping them from reproducing the effect produced by deviation in the target language texts. With the failure in rendering deviation in the target language text, translators have to focus on conveying the semantic message instead.Acknowledging limits of translating deviation does not mean that translators can do nothing.Instead, understanding and learning how to identify different kinds of deviation help them to improve their sensitivity and accuracy in translation. Thus, this thesis takes several Chinese versions of Charles Dickens' famous novel Oliver Twist as examples to explore limits of translating deviation in novels and propose some translation strategies.Firstly, there is the literature review of deviation and translatability, which involves the studies at home and abroad.Several translated versions of Oliver Twist are also introduced in this section.Secondly, under the basis of Leech's classification of deviation and Catford's viewpoint on limits of translatability, this thesis discusses the process and importance of identifying deviation in literary works as well as the translatability of different types of deviation. Finally, the thesis takes deviation in Oliver Twist as examples to analyze the limits of translating deviation in levels of graphology, grammar, semantics, and register, and puts forward corresponding translation strategies and suggestions.Making objective analysis of deviation in literary works helps readers better appreciate language in novels as well as help translators better grasp the aesthetic value of language elements,so that they can reproduce the original style to the maximum to reduce the loss of the aesthetic value.
