In the current English teaching practice,there is still a lot of controversy about whether the mother tongue should be used in foreign language learning.Most people hold negative opinions about this approach.From the developing history of language transfer theory,in the last 30 years,the mother tongue was considered only to have negative transfer,and was not advised to be used at all,or at least as little as possible.But in fact,the exclusive use of English in English classes does not meet the expectations of both teachers and students,especially in the primary school English teaching.The author,who has been engaged in primary school English teaching for over ten years,has found that whether or not the mother tongue is used in classroom,the foreign language learners will,consciously or unconsciously,rely on their knowledge of the mother tongue to help their understanding or language output during listening,speaking,reading,and writing.Therefore,in English teaching,we should not move from one extreme to another.We should combine different teaching methods and make good use of them.The appropriate use of Chinese is an effective way to learn English for Chinese learners,especially beginners.Therefore,the purpose of this study is to explore how the use of mother tongue in primary school English classes can improve children's interest in learning through the appropriate use of the mother tongue.This study takes primary school English teaching as the object of study.The author has studied the use and value of the mother tongue in primary school English teaching through questionnaires,classroom observation and interviews.Based on the data and data analysis,the research shows that the use of the mother tongue is helpful in primary school English teaching.It also shows the right moment to use the mother tongue and the principles that should be followed.In addition,some suggestions have been put forward on the use of the mother tongue in primary school English teaching.This article consists of five parts.The first part is the background of the research,the second part the literature review,the third part the analysis of the status quo of primary school English teaching.The fourth part is the result analysis of questionnaires and classroom observation,and the fifth part the results and findings.
