Translation Strategies Of Nominalization Phrases In Technical Texts:A Report On The Translation Of Making The Nation Safer:the Role Of Science And Technology In Countering Terrorism(chapter 3)

This translation report is based on the third chapter of Making the Nation Safer:The Role of Science and Technology in Countering Terrorism.And the third chapter,Human and Agricultural Health System,mainly describes the efforts should be done related to human and agricultural health to respond bioterrorism attacks.As a technical text,the source text features objective,concise and logical language,displays a large information density and involves abundant proper nouns,nominalization phrases and postpositive attributives and the like.Considering the text features and cases distribution,this report takes the translation of nominalization phrases as the main topic to discuss and analyze.According to the definitions and text features,this report classifies nominalization phrases into verb-nominalization phrases and adjective-nominalization phrases.And in the former part,on the basis of various ways to form verb-nominalization phrases,this report futher discusses the translation of affix-derivation,V-ing and zero-derivation verb-nominalization phrases.As for the latter,in the light of different sentence constituents the phrases display,this report discusses the translation of adjective-nominalization phrases as subjects,objects as well as other sentence constituents.In the end,the author concludes related translation strategies in this report,including conversion,generalization,redundancy deletion and default compensation,and hopes to provide some references for the translation of similar problems.
