Aspect Impact On The Action-sentence Compatibility Effect In Chinese Sentence Comprehension

Embodied approaches to comprehension propose that understanding language entails performing mental simulations of its content.The Action-sentence Compatibility Effect studies reported mental simulation of motor actions during processing of motion language.When processing sentences about performable actions,language understanders activated perceptual and motor systems to perform mental simulations of those actions.Therefore,this study will focus on the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect,focusing on the effects of aspect on the simulation of Chinese sentences in the understanding of embodied language,as well as the role of concrete/abstract and other factors.The research adopted mixed experimental designs,is divided into three experiments to explore the different aspect for the influence of the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect in Chinese sentence comprehension.It took the Chinese simple sentences including toward/away from the body to the action direction as experimental materials.The response latency of judgment of sentence meaning was collected as the experimental data.In experiment 1,it took the Chinese concrete sentences including progressive and perfect as experimental materials.Using the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect methodology.Participants were 40 undergraduate students.Using a mixed experiment design of 2(aspect: progressive/perfect)× 2(sentence direction: away/toward)× 2(response direction: yes-is-far/yes-is-near),and the response direction was the variable between the subjects.The results of the experiment showed that in Chinese concrete sentences,whether they were progressive or perfect,there was the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect.In experiment 2,it took the Chinese abstract sentences including progressive and perfect as experimental materials with the same experimental method.Participants were 36 undergraduate students.Using a mixed experiment design of 2(aspect: progressive/perfect)× 2(sentence direction: away/toward)× 2(response direction: yes-is-far/yes-is-near),and the response direction was the variable between the subjects.The results of the experiment showed that in Chinese abstract sentences,whether they were progressive or perfect,there was the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect.In experiment 3,it took the future aspect sentences including concrete and abstract as experimental materials with the same experimental method.Participants were 40 undergraduate students.Using a mixed experiment design of 2(sentence direction: away/toward)× 2(sentence type: concrete/abstract)× 2(response direction: yes-is-far/yes-is-near),and the response direction was the variable between the subjects.The results of the experiment showed that in Chinese future aspect sentences,whether they were concrete or abstract,there was the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect.The research indicated:(1)There will also be the Action-sentence Compatibility Effect during comprehending Chinese sentences including different aspect and different sentence types.(2)The processing of Chinese sentences is mainly based on the interaction between sentence order and semantics,and the function of the syntactic mark is not obvious.
