This report is a case study of the C-E translation of a novel entitled Instigation.Based on the short story created by a famous Chinese local novelist Peng Jiahuang, this report aims at proving the effective guidance of Translation as Adaption and Selection to the translation by analyzing the difficulties and problems encountered during the translation process and probing into the appropriate translation strategies. This report is composed of seven parts, namely task description, task process, literature review, introduction of Translation as Adaptation and Selection, analysis of the linguistic features in Instigation, case study and conclusion. The report first introduces the translation task, the source task and the significance of the task. Then, the translation process is elaborated from aspects of pre-translation,while-traslation and post-translation.After that,it probes into the effective translation strategies based on the main ideas of theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection.Since the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection is the basic translation principle of eco-translatology,it requires that the translator should make multi-dimensional adaptations to the translational eco-environment in accordance with diverse levels and various aspects,so as to make adaptive selection accordingly. The translation project is conducted under the guidance of Professor Hu Gengshen's theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection, combined with the linguistic features of the source text,it makes adaptation and selection at rhetorical level, lexical level and syntactic level to solve the difficulties in the translation practice from dimensions of language, culture and communication. Finally,it comes to the conclusion that the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection provides valid theoretical foundation for this translation practice. After specifying the purpose of the translation, the strategy of “three-dimensional transformation” should be adopted in translation practice,so as to better guide the translator to carry on “adaptation and selection” and improve the quality of translation.Furthermore, the gains and shortcomings learned from this translation practice are served as reference for further translation practice and give inspiration to the translator to effectively play her subjectivity and broaden her knowledge scope and make adaptations to the translational eco-environment from the dimensions of language, culture and communication in the future,so as to select the best strategies to achieve the highest degree of holistic “adaptation and selection”.
