The cultivation of English reading competence plays an important role in English teaching and learning as well as application.It also means that English reading competence is not only main method of learning English knowledge and gain information,but also the foundation of acquiring and applying English.Therefore,the college entrance examination has been emphasizing the examination of students' English reading competence,that's why the score of reading comprehension is 40,which accounts for the most part of the total score.In addition,since 2011,there has been a new part added to examine students' reading competence,banked gap-filling,which requires students to choose five out of seven sentences given in the test paper to make a passage,whose five sentences are missing,a complete and meaningful one.Actually,the main purpose of banked gap-filling is to examine discourse competence of students',such as the comprehension of the content,the structure as well as the logic of the text.This shows that students' discourse comprehension is more and more important.However,from in respect of the current situation of English reading teaching in senior high school and the efficiency of students' answering the new type,there are many problems that are worthy discussing and studying.Based on the situations above,two research questions are introduced as follows:(1)According to the requirements of banked gap-filing,how to apply the Cohesion and Coherence Theory to English teaching reading?(2)How does the application of the Cohesion and Coherence Theory to English teaching impact on students' efficiency of answering banked gap-filling?In order to work out the questions mentioned above,based on the Halliday and Hasan's Cohesion and Coherence Theory,the study attempts to apply the theory to English reading teaching and banked gap-filling in college entrance examination.Hence,Students from one class of Grade One in a Senior High School of Chongqing are selected as the experimental subject and the experiment lasts about 4 months.After the experiment,the results of the experimental data,such as questionnaires,reading tests and time,are compared and analyzed.Through the analysis of experimental data and discussion,the study confirms that English reading teaching and answering banked gap-filling based on Cohesion and Coherence is helpful to improve the efficiency of answering banked gap-filling,as well as improve students' reading competence.It is hoped that the study can provide some useful suggestions on English reading teaching and banked gap-filling teaching for English teachers and enrich the methods of English reading teaching.
