The book How Languages are Learned explores effective methods of language learning from the reviews on the important language acquisition researches and main language learning theories.Since the original text is about language learning,it is characterized by professional terms,complex and diversified sentence structures as well as clear and concise language.Accordingly,the translator makes an effort to convey the source text faithfully and smoothly with the adoption of combining the literal translation with free translation.This report is based on the translation practice of Chapter 3 “Individual Differences in Second Language Learning” in this book.This chapter mainly explores the differences of different individuals in the second language learning process and describes how the differences are associated with the effects of second language learning and second language teaching,through the analysis on the personal characteristics of second language learners such as language learning aptitude,age,personality,attitudes and motivation,etc.The collision and fusion of multi-culture under the background of new era call for the further improvement of the teaching staff and the cultivation of foreign language talents.The translation of How Languages Are Learned is of great significance on language learning.For one thing,it can help teachers in our country understand the new theories and knowledges about language teaching which will be applied in the teaching practice so as to promote teaching efficiency.For another,it facilitates second language learners' comprehensive understanding of second language acquisition in terms of its development,characteristics and rules,which can encourage the learners to achieve greater efficiency.The present translation firstly has a comprehensive command of the features of original text as well as related information on the writer and the book.Based on this,the report,with the typical cases selected from the translation,aims to analyze the problems and difficulties in the translation practice process and conclude some feasible translation techniques accordingly from the perspective of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.Through the translation practice,the translator comes to realize that a good translation cannot be achieved without full preparation for the translation task,flexible use of translation strategies or solid bilingual abilities.
