Five Dynasties and Ten States period was a very special and important stage in the history of Chinese music. In the 1990s,it was of greatly important academic value and significance for studying the history and culture of the early period of Five Dynasties to have excavated Wang Chuzhi's tomb. The painting and bass-relief about music discovered in the tomb provide valuable information for studying the development of music art in early Five Dynasties.Based on the musical instrument images in Wang Chuzhi's tomb, this article discusses the musical instruments played by musicians in those images. The proper body is composed of three chapters. The first chapter overviews the historical and cultural background of the Five Dynasties and Ten States period,Wang Chuzhi's tomb and the musical instrument images discovered in the tomb;the second chapter classifies the ten instruments,i.e.,konghou,zheng,pipa,sheng,bili,di(flute),paiban(clap stick),dagu(a big drum),fangxiang and Jiegu(an ancient drum),into string instrument, wind instrument and percussion instrument, and explores their use during the Five Dynasties and Ten States period with the reference of the literature and other archaeological information on the same historical period.Further,by comparing the related records on the above-mentioned musical instruments in The Old Book of the Tang Dynasty(???,Jiu Tang Shu)and The New Book of the Tang Dynasty(???,Xin Tang Shu),this part also discusses the music style of this kind of band combination shown in the images of the musical instrument of Wang Chuzhi's tomb, and reveals the relationship between the band combination of such kind and the music in the Tang Dynasty, believing that it carries the Kucha musical band style manifested in the "ten kinds of music" in the Tang Dynasty to a certain degree;and the third chapter discusses on the cultural elements related to the musical instrument images in Wang Chuzhi's tomb, mainly focusing on the Tang Dynasty elements reflected in the musical instrument images as well as their relationship with vaudeville popular in the Liao Dynasty. The use of the musical instruments seen in the images discovered in the tomb closely related to the music in the Tang Dynasty due to Wang Chuzhi's own identity as well as other exterior factors. The Later Jin Regime, after the time of Wang Chuzhi, transmitted vaudeville to the Liao Dynasty, and the music played in the Later Jin also originated from that of the Tang Dynasty.Hence, the author holds that the form of band combination embodied in the musical instrument images in Wang's tomb is closely related to vaudeville played in the Liao Dynasty.the reason lies in both the Later Jin and the Liao inheriting the music of the Tang Dynasty.
