Feedback is regarded as an essential part in the process writing approach and becomes a hot topic in foreign language teaching and researching.The effective feedback can help students improve their writing competence.As technology advances,the Automated Writing Evaluation(AWE)system has come into being.The AWE system has been extensively applied to language teaching and large-scale tests in some foreign countries.However,in our country the research on AWE system is still in the primary stage.Many studies mainly research on non-English majors,and most of them just make a contrast between teacher written feedback and Automated Writing Evaluation System.It is few to study teacher written feedback on art majors' college English competence.The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of teacher written feedback assisted by AWE on art majors' college English writing competence.The subjects of the research are 110 art majors who are from two parallel classes in Shenyang Normal University.The experimental class receives teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system,while the control class receives teacher written feedback.This experiment lasts for 15 weeks with combining quantitative and qualitative research methods.The research instruments include English writing tests,questionnaires and interview outlines.The data of the writing tests and questionnaires are collected and analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences 19.0.This study aims to answer the following three questions:(1)What are the differences of art majors' college English writing competence after receiving teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system and teacher written feedback?(2)What are the revision characteristics of art majors after receiving teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system?(3)What are the art majors' evaluations towards the teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system?After analyzing the collected data,the followed conclusions are drown:(1)Teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system can improve art majors' writing competence better than teacher written feedback,it can improve art majors' vocabulary competence and grammatical accuracy,but there is not a significant difference in writing content and structure.(2)After receiving Automated Writing Evaluation System,art majors mainly revise spelling,wording and grammar.However,after receiving teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system,art majors not only revise spelling,wording and grammar but pay attention to the content and structure in their compositions.(3)Art majors are more likely to receive teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system.It can initiate their self-correction and reduce their writing anxiety.Based on above conclusions,this study has practical guiding significance on applying teacher written feedback assisted by AWE system to art majors' college English writing teaching.
