Gabriel Jose de la Concordia Garcia Marquez,Colombian novelist, journalist and social activist, was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.Of Love and Other Demons, the fourth novel published after Marquez won Nobel Prize, represents more traditional elements both in the form and in the content. It narrates a love tragedy:Sierva Maria, the daughter of Marquis, falls in love with Father Cayetano, when she is sent to the convent of Santa Clara to receive an exorcism.Under the instruction of intertextuality theory, this thesis will analyze the intertextuality between Of Love and Other Demons and The Scarlet Letter from three perspectives, subject, image and ethical tendency.Based on it,the thesis will interpret the reason why Of Love and Other Demons and The Scarlet Letter show opposite ethical tendencies albeit on similar subjects. In addition,on the foundation of the text of Of Love and Other Demons, taking the author's life experiences into account,as well as integrating the social reality in the age where the story happened, this thesis is designed to analyze the author's irony attitude towards the Christian ethic.Furthermore, the irony attitude will be deepened to the grievance against European colonial domination and to the aspiration to the fusion of Latin American civilizations. The introduction summarizes the research status of Marquez and Of Love and Other Demons, points out the vacancy in the research on Of Love and Other Demons, additionally, gives a brief presentation about the theoretical position applied. The first chapter demonstrates the intertextuality between Of Love and Other Demons and The Scarlet Letter from plots and structures, and reveals the fact that these two texts share common points in subjects while show different points in structures. The second chapter compares the images of maiden and Father,on the basis of which, demonstrates the differences between characters, and analyzes author's various intentions to set these two images. The third chapter explores the reason why two texts show opposite ethic tendencies, furthermore, analyzes Marquez's irony attitude towards the Christian ethic.Returning to the ethical orientations of Of Love and Other Demons, the fourth chapter points out that the text is the reflection of social reality at Marquez's time. What is more,it digs out the fact that author's intention is to attract reader's attention to the conflict and fusion of Latin American civilizations, and then, draws the conclusion that it is supposed to refuse to regard Latin America from European view, and to strive for the harmonious coexistence among different cultures and civilizations.
