As one of the greatest masterpieces in Chinese history,Tao Te Ching contains many dialectical views, such as the unity of opposites and mutual conversion, which has a profound influence on traditional philosophy, science, politics, religion and so on.The book occupies an important position in the history of the pre-Qin literature and is crowned with high value of literary research and appreciation. However, the form beauty and rich connotation of the book will inevitably be lost in the process of translation,so how to solve this problem has become a key point in the translation of Chinese classics.Harmonization Theory is a philosophical theory proposed by Prof.Zhang Liwen,in order to solve some major social problems and challenges in current era.Prof.Wu Zhijie and other scholars combined Harmonization Theory with translation and proposed a new translation theory "Harmonization Translatology".Due to the difference between Chinese and Western languages and cultures, there will be contradictions and conflicts in the process of translating classics. The theory presents a method to integrate different cultural factors to solve those problems and provides a new perspective to obtain the translation that retains the literary quality and allows the target reader to accept it.From the perspective of Harmonization Translatology, the thesis will launch a study on the versions of Gu Zhengkun,Lin Yutang and Arthur Waley to explore the feasibility of the guidance of the theory to the translation of classics. The thesis endeavors to discuss the harmonization between the translation subjects including the translator, the original author, the implied author and the target reader, and analyzes the fusion of horizons of the three translators and other subjects in the book.Besides, the thesis expounds the harmonization between the subject(the translator)and the object(language or culture)in English translation of the book, and explains the importance of harmonization between the three translators and the elements of the object.Under the guidance of Harmonization Translatology,in the aspect of harmonization between different subjects, the translator should have a dialogue with the original author to understand the literal meaning of the text, with the implied author to find out the implied meaning in the text, and then with the target reader to produce a moderate translation;in the aspect of harmonization of the subject and the object, the translator should make the translation achieve harmonization at the level of language and culture. The "spirit"pursued by aesthetic view of Harmonization Translatology provides guidance for linguistic harmonization, which means the translator should break away from the fixed format in the original text and select the corresponding format in the target language to achieve an effect of"verve likeness"."Cultural diversity" of cultural view of Harmonization Translatology shows the way of cultural harmonization, which means the translator should transfer the original Chinese culture to the fullest in order to inject more vitality into the target culture.
