As a genre of political discourse, the white papers issued by the Chinese government function as a window for the world to get a better understanding of the stances of the Chinese government. The translation of white papers hence attracts extensive attention in the field of translation studies. This thesis collects a series of White Papers: Progress in China's Human Rights promulgated by Chinese government in recent years and their English versions as the subject of research, and examines how the source texts were translated into the English ones from the perspective of critical discourse analysis(CDA),in the hope of finding out the potential implications as well as the possible techniques for the translation of political discourse.Critical discourse analysis aims at revealing the power relations and ideologies implied in the texts and discourse.Taking Fairclough's three-dimensional framework as theoretical foundation of CDA and Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar as practical approach for CDA,the author attempts to answer the following questions:What are the major stylistic features of political discourse and those of White Papers in particular? Which factors come into effect during the process of translating the White Papers? In which perspectives do power relation and ideology exert influence upon the translating of the White Papers? What techniques could be proposed in response to the influence of power relation and ideology? The present research indicates that, the translator could make flexible shift in wording, modality, and shift in reporting modes,to make the target text readable to the world while appropriately showing the stances of the Chinese government.
