In vocabulary teaching,the single presentation mode's boring and high forgetting rate are common.Junior students are less voluntary to participate in learning vocabulary,due to the deficiency of various types of vocabulary presentations in traditional teaching techniques.From psycholinguistics,the presentation of English vocabulary influences on English vocabulary learning and retention.The effective vocabulary presentation modes motivate students to learn.It is necessary to explore different presentation modes to have different influence on vocabulary retention.Based on memory theory,elaboration theory and information process theory,the following research questions were examined in this study:1.Is there a significant difference in the vocabulary grades after learning vocabulary by thematic clustering and semantic clustering presentation ?2.Is there a difference between immediate tests and delayed test applying thematic clustering and semantic clustering presentation?3.What is the students' attitudes toward thematic clustering and semantic clustering vocabulary presentation in vocabulary teaching?A total of 41 students in Yi Ning NO.7 junior high school were selected as participants in the experiment.After the vocabulary presentation,the participants received a immediate test,two delayed tests.Statistic data was analyzed by social science statistical software(SPSS 19.0).Based on the experimental and data analysis,the findings as follows:Both of the vocabulary presentation modes have positive effects on students' vocabulary acquisition.In the immediate test,the average score of vocabulary test thematic clustering is slightly higher than semantic clustering,but there is no significant difference between the two types of presentation modes in the short-term memory test.In the long-term memory,the average score of the thematic clustering vocabulary presentation is higher than the semantic clustering.The two modes have significant differences to the participants,and the thematic clustering vocabulary memory retention remains better than semantic clustering presentation mode.In general,The retention rate of the thematic clustering mode is better than that of the semantic clustering mode.Through the experiment,English vocabulary teaching enlightened: In the thematic clustering mode can't help the learners to memorize a large number of words in a short time,but this mode is conducive to the vocabulary retention for a long time.In the normal English vocabulary instruction,students can remember the vocabulary for a long time and use vocabulary flexibly,it is best to present the vocabulary through thematic clustering presentation.At the same time,the learners strengthen the second language comprehensive ability in order to solid the language foundation.It is good to learn the memory vocabulary by presentation with thematic clustering.In addition,focusing on memory words can achieve better short-term memory effects,but with a higher rate of forgetting vocabulary.In order to avoid forgetting,the learner should review in time and keep the vocabulary learned in the long-term memory.
