As a weak link in English teaching, how to effectively improve the English writing levels of foreign or second language learners has always been the focus of second language acquisition. In English, adjectives are the third largest word class after nouns and verbs, its grammatical and semantic importance being no less than any other classes. Therefore, this study analyzes the local grammar of EA(evaluation adjective)in writing. This paper first clarifies the source and meaning of local grammar, and reviews the previous research results. After that, this paper focuses on the research of local grammar of evaluative language. At first, the ETS corpora are used to establish four groups of writings. Then a comparative analysis of node words on high frequency adjectives is conducted and a collocation analysis is carried out as well. Finally, one node word is analyzed according to the local grammar of evaluation theory. It is found that the first language transfer has an influence on English learners.German students are more inclined to choose a corresponding structure and semantic usage similar to their first language. The low level students are limited by their levels. The different levels of English have different influences on understanding and expression of EA.By adopting the corpus linguistics approach, which is both qualitative and quantitative, this study aims to offer a better understanding in the use of adjectives in different non-native English learners whether it is from different countries or at different levels of English. At the same time, this study has certain theoretical and practical significance for local grammar theory and English writing teaching.
