Teaching materials are not only the main means for teachers to teach,but also the important content for students to learn.The National English Curriculum Standard(2017)indicates that while the teaching materials meet the basic requirements of the curriculum standards,we should try our best to meet the needs of students with different characteristics.Therefore,how to choose and design appropriate teaching materials according to the requirements of the curriculum standards and students' characteristics is one of the essential elements that researchers and developers of teaching materials should take into account.With the method of text analysis,literature research and questionnaire,choosing 385 senior high school students of grade 2 from 4 schools in Zhangzhou,Fujian province as the research subjects,the study aims to explore the following questions: 1.What's the theme distribution features of PEP senior English textbook(compulsory)? 2.What's the distribution features of the senior high school students' interest in the themes of PEP senior English textbooks(compulsory)? 3.What is the influence of different variables(key or ordinary senior high schools and gender)on the choice of students' theme interest in PEP senior English textbooks(compulsory)?Through the data statistics and analysis,the results show that :1.There are 25 themes in PEP senior English textbooks(compulsory).In terms of the theme contexts,the themes of PEP senior English textbooks(compulsory)are distributed in the following three theme contexts: “human and ego”,“human and society” and “human and nature”.In addition,5themes(20%)belong to “human and ego ”,14 themes(56%)“human and society” and 6themes(24%)“human and nature”.In terms of the subject property,the theme distribution of this material is interdisciplinary.And humanity(68.4%)account for a larger proportion than natural science(31.6%).2.There are significant differences among senior high school students in the interest in the 25 themes.They are more interested in the themes of leisure and entertainment which are closely relate to their daily life while they are less interested in thethemes which are philosophical and not related to their daily life.3.In terms of the theme interest choices of this material,there are significant differences between key high school students and ordinary high school students in the following 9 themes: B1U2 English around the world,B1U4 Earthquakes,B3U1Festivals around the world,B3U2 Healthy eating,B3U3 The Million Pound Bank Note,B3U4Astronomy:the science of the stars,B4U2 Working the land,B5U1 Great scientists,B5U2 The United Kingdom.However,there are no significant differences in other themes.In addition,there are significant differences between boys and girls in the following 6 themes:B2U2The Olympic Games,B2U3 Computers,B4U1Womenof achievement,B4U2 Working the land,B4U3 A taste of English humour,B5U1 Great scientists.However,there are no significant differences in other themes.Based on the above research results,the author puts forward some teaching suggestions from the perspective of teachers' familiarity with teaching materials,strategies of using teaching materials and the understanding about the theme interest of students with different level and gender,which will help teachers make good use of the teaching materials,offer students some supplementary materials which conform to their theme interest and improve their efficiency of learning English.
